I was talking with a young person in my office the other day who mentioned that she is trying to learn some basic moulage techniques for her upcoming Halloween costume. Not having been a big participant of Halloween for several decades, I asked her what moulage is and got quite an education.
In short, moulage is the art of applying realistic-looking wounds, injuries, and diseases to simulate various medical conditions. It is often used in medical training, emergency preparedness drills, and disaster response training to create lifelike scenarios that help healthcare professionals to practice their skills.
While moulage is not directly associated with Halloween, it can certainly be used to create detailed and realistic costumes and makeup.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend among Halloween enthusiasts and special effects makeup artists to use professional-grade techniques, including moulage, to take their Halloween costumes to the next level. These enthusiasts often share their creations on social media platforms, inspiring others to experiment with moulage techniques for Halloween.
It’s important to note that while moulage can create incredibly authentic effects, it still requires skill and knowledge to do it safely and effectively. It’s important to consider consulting with professionals or watching tutorials to learn the techniques properly.
Here are a few examples of how moulage techniques might be used in Halloween costumes:
Zombies: Moulage techniques can transform someone into a convincing zombie, complete with lifelike wounds, decaying flesh, and bloody injuries. This is a popular choice for Halloween costumes and haunted attractions.
Vampires: Using moulage, individuals can create realistic bite marks and blood effects to enhance their vampire costumes, making it look like they’ve just fed on their victims (yummy).

Although moulage techniques can really bring a costume to life, personally, should I decide at the last minute to go trick-or-treating with my young friends, I’ll probably just buy a simple multi-colored wig at the costume shop and be done with it.
